چکیده

Several models of intra-household decision making have been suggested in the literature. One important dichotomy is between non-cooperative and cooperative models (including speci...c models of bargaining). The other important distinction is between models that allow for caring and those that do not. We present a framework that includes all suggested models and variants as special cases. We derive the theoretical predictions of these models for the relationship between expenditures on goods and the intra-household distribution of income. We estimate and test between these relationships using Canadian household expenditure data. We conclude that there is evidence that both husbands and wives care for each other in the sense that with an unequal distribution of incomes the high income partner behaves as a ‘Becker dictator’ and there is local income pooling. We further ...nd that for about half of the households in our sample (those with more equal incomes) a re-distribution of income would lead to changes in budget allocations. We conclude that the data are consistent with a collective model with caring partners. ¤We gratefully acknowledge the contribution of Wasif Rasheed to the research presented in this paper. Opening the Black Box of Intra-Household Decision-Making: Theory and Non-Parametric Empirical Tests of General Collective Consumption Models We non-parametrically test a general collective consumption model with public consumption and externalities inside the household. We further propose a novel approach to model special cases of the general collective model. These special cases include altern...

Modeling Household Time Allocation Behavior: Comparative Analysis Using a Large-scale Data from Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities in Japan

Members in a household interact with each other when allocating their limited time resources to various activities, reflecting role specification and power structure within the household. For each member, some of activities are competitive in time allocation. In addition, each member might show different interest in or attach different importance to different activities. To reflect such complic...

Constraint-based assessment of intra-household bargaining on time allocation to activities and travel using individual accessibility measures

Accessibility plays an important role in behavioral decision making. It influences a variety of behavior patterns in time use, resource allocation, and activity allocation of household members. In spite of the recognition of the importance of accessibility in behavioral modeling, appropriate accessibility measures based on time geography are rarely used in time use and activity participation mo...

Cognitive Skills and Intra-Household Allocation of Schooling

Using household data from two districts in northern Ghana, this study examines how cognitive skills affect the allocation of schooling across the children of a household. The analysis reveals that relative to the rest of the siblings in the household, an increase of one standard deviation in the score of cognitive tests increases by 0.128-0.178 the number of years of schooling attended in the f...
